Susanta Chakraborty (Born 7 December 1955, Howrah, West Bengal) is an Indian painter and printmaker whose artistic career spans more than four decades. After completing his studies in Science from the University of Calcutta in 1977, he pursued formal training in Fine Arts at the Indian College of Arts & Draftsmanship, graduating in 1983. His early artistic development was shaped by his engagement with graphic art, particularly woodcut and intaglio printmaking.Over the years, Chakraborty has developed a distinctive visual language that combines technical mastery with philosophical depth. His works frequently engage with mythology, social realities, memory, and human experience. Drawing inspiration from epics such as the Mahabharata, he transforms traditional narratives into contemporary reflections on power, morality, conflict, and human destiny. His paintings are characterized by layered textures, rich surfaces, symbolic imagery, and an evocative use of colour. While deeply rooted in Indian cultural traditions, his work remains open-ended, encouraging viewers to discover their own meanings and associations.Throughout his career, he has received fellowships from Lalit Kala Akademi and the Government of India and has exhibited extensively across India and abroad. His works are represented in public collections, including Lalit Kala Akademi, and in numerous private collections in India and internationally.
